The Harrowing of Hell (1 Peter 3:18-20; 4:6)

“For Christ also suffered for our sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but raised to life in the spirit. In the spirit also he went to preach to the spirits in prison, those who had refused to obey long ago while God waited patiently in the days of Noah during the building of the ark.

And this is the reason why the gospel was preached even to the dead, so that, although they might be judged in the flesh like men, they might enjoy the life of God in the spirit.”
